What is Yerba Mate?
Yerba mate refers to the dried, mature leaves and twigs of the yerba mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis). An invigorating infusion, called mate, is prepared from this plant material.
What are the effects of yerba mate?
Many people appreciate yerba mate, especially for its consistently invigorating effect, which is often perceived as milder and more balanced compared to coffee. Yerba mate naturally contains caffeine. Therefore, consuming mate can have a pleasantly stimulating effect and contribute to daily well-being.
More about Effects of Mate Tea You can find out more in our guide.
How do I store yerba mate correctly?
- Store in a dry, cool, dark place and tightly sealed.
- Avoid moisture, intense heat, or direct sunlight.
How do you drink Yerba Mate?
What is the difference between mate and yerba mate?
Yerba Mate refers to the plant material – that is, the dried and crushed leaves and fine twigs of the mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis).
Mate, on the other hand, is the beverage produced when this yerba is steeped in hot or cold water. Traditionally, mate is drunk from a gourd using a bombilla (drinking straw), but it can also be prepared like tea in a French press or tea strainer.
In short:
Yerba mate are the leaves – mate is the infusion made from them.
What is the difference between Erva Mate and Yerba Mate?
Yerba mate is the name for the traditional mate plant material used primarily in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay: mature mate leaves, fine twigs, and a natural proportion of mate leaf powder. After harvesting, yerba mate is typically stored for 18–24 months, resulting in a fuller, rounder, and stronger flavor.
Erva Mate This is the Brazilian variety. It also consists of mate leaves, small branches, and some powder, but it is packaged directly after harvesting without long storage and can therefore be drunk practically fresh. As a result, Erva Mate tastes greener, fresher, and milder.
In short:
Yerba Mate = mature, full and traditionally Argentinian.
Erva Mate = fresh, green and typically Brazilian.
