Yerba mate refers to the dried, mature leaves and twigs of the yerba mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis). An invigorating infusion, called mate, is prepared from this plant material.

Traditionally, mate is drunk from a gourd with a Bombilla – a drinking straw with a fine sieve at the bottom. However, yerba mate can also be prepared very simply like tea, for example with a tea strainer or in a French press.
